Q&A: So I need some new makeup and need some advice on where to go drugstore and where to opt for more expensive…?

I need:
foundation
concealer
loose or finishing powder of some sort
mascara

I’m also considering a primer. I have acne-prone combination skin. Can anyone give me tips on where to splurge and where to skimp? I’m on a budget.

If you have problems with acne, I would get more expensive foundation, concealer, and powder. Clinique is really good and it still isn’t ridiculously priced. I don’t think there is any difference in drugstore and designer mascara.

Foundation- I love Revlon Colorstay or Neutrogena Healthy Skin
Concealer- I like Benefit Boing
Powder- I like Smashbox halo
Mascara- I love Neutrogena Healthy volume.

splurge on foundation. definitely skim on mascara. i guess you could skimp on concealer and finishing powder. here are the best drugstore and high end products, in my opinion of course, but i am a makeup addict so you can trust me lol.

drugstore:
foundation- revlon photoready, maybelline 24 hour superstay foundation, neutrogena healthy skin foundation.
concealer- maybelline 24 hour superstay concealer, or maybelline dream matte mousse concealer.
finishing powder- maybelline dream matte powder (this one is really good!)
mascara- covergirl lash blast. it is america’s number one mascara and i love it! no need to splurge on a high end mascara!

high-end:
foundation- NARS sheer glow. this is the foundation i use and i love it! its very popular.
concealer- bobbi brown creamy concealer, make up for ever full cover concealer
finishing powder- laura mercier mineral finishing powder in transparent. i heard this was great.
mascara- make up for ever aqua smokey lash, buxom lash by bare escentuals

Foundation: splurge (if you end up unhappy with a drugstore foundation, most drugstores don’t take returns if it’s been used so that’d be money down the drain)

Concealer: splurge (same thing with the foundation, if you’re not happy it’s just money down the drain)

Finishing powder: skimp (especially if it’s translucent. The one I swear by is by NYC, not expensive at all)

Mascara: skimp (I’ve tried high end and low end and honestly, there’s not much of a difference and if there is, it definitely doesn’t make up for spending about more)

If you’re considering a primer, Victoria’s Secret actually just came out with one and I love it to death!! I swatched that primer and their foundation on my inner wrist while wearing a white long-sleeved jacket and it didn’t rub off at all. It’s also about . Good luck!
